At Oakbridge International school, teachers support a small group of learners to read a text independently. It provides differentiated teaching that supports learners in developing reading proficiency'.The small group model allows students to be taught in a way that is intended to be more focused on their specific needs, accelerating their progress.
Typically a group will engage in a variety of pre-reading activities such as predicting, learning new vocabulary, and discussing various text features. This activity involves scanning through the text to look at pictures and predicting how the story will go.
As learners read, the teacher will monitor decoding and comprehension. The teacher asks the learner if something makes sense, encourages and/ or prompts them to use a strategy.
Following the reading, the teacher checks learner comprehension by talking about the story. The teacher may ask further questions. Learner understanding of what they have read is assessed.
The Oakbridge learner has their literacy needs met through guided reading.
